“Kill you?” Lachlan said. “This is a spirit, you said. How would it kill you?”

“I don’t know. It’s the legend. I don’t want to find out.”

Sully raised a brow. If his friend, Marc Echoles, were here, no doubt he’d have all the answers as to the nature of this legend. Instead, Sully had two other people as clueless as he was.

“I think we’re going to need you to explain,” he said.

Pressing her fingers to her mouth, Leah exhaled heavily against them. “Okay. I knew I’d have to do this coming here. I’m just scared if I repeat it, she’ll reappear. I haven’t slept, haven’t even slowed down for this long since the night before last.”

“At all?” Dez asked.

Leah shook her head. “Like I said, if I stop, she’ll kill me.”

Lachlan leaned his elbows onto the surface of his desk. His face read bored. This was a man who hadn’t so much as believed in ghosts before Sully came into his life.

While Lachlan knew ghosts were real, Sully wasn’t sure he’d be willing to simply accept a person’s fears as reality—at least not without some proof. For Sully’s part, he wasn’t there yet either. Leah had as much as said she was being stalked by a homicidal spirit, but Sully had yet to sense a presence attached to her. Sure, if it wasn’t a human homicide victim, he wouldn’t see anything, but he should at least get a sense of a hovering spirit—especially a really bad one with the power to kill.

“Why don’t you start at the beginning?” Lachlan said. “How you crossed paths with whatever you’re saying this is.”

If Leah was bothered by the doubt in Lachlan’s tone, she didn’t show it. Sully suspected anyone truly panicked about the possibility of violent death wouldn’t care much about something as trivial as the doubts of others.

“It started as a stupid dare,” she said. “A few of us decided to split the cost and rent a nice hotel room to celebrate the start of Christmas break. We decided on the Royal Arms. We were having a few drinks on Saturday night, hanging out in the room. We’d been talking about ghosts and other creepy stuff, and one of the girls suggested Bloody Mary. But two of them said they’d done it years ago and nothing happened. So one of the girls suggested this other creepy game she’d seen someone post about on their social media. It was this one.” Leah paused to tap her index finger against the word she’d jotted onto the paper.

“I’ve never heard of it,” Dez said.

“I hadn’t either. We looked it up, and it sounded as creepy as the Bloody Mary one. We’d all had a few drinks by then, liquid courage and all that. I volunteered to try it. I’ve always been interested in the paranormal, even though I consider myself a skeptic—or at least I used to. I guess part of me has always wanted to have it proven, that there’s really this whole other part of our world.
